Skills Explained
Skills are the things you can do! Everyone has skills, even if they aren’t superb at them. You even have skills in real life! At least one dot in Crafting: Cooking, right? You can microwave something, I know it!
It’s the same in an RPG, and in this SLRPG (a term I just made up), you get skills too! Like attributes, you get a number of points (which we call dots) to spend as you like. Also, like Attributes, the measurement of how good you are at said skill is measured like this:
1 dot - Poor
2 dots - Average
3 dots - Good
4 dots - Exceptional
5 dots - Superb
Skill Dot Allotments:
Unclaimed & Rescuee: 36
Demigod: 40
Veteran: 43
Leader: 46
Centaur: 40
Satyr: 40
One thing to note, however, is when you take a skill to 3 dots, you are able to take what is called a “Specialty” or “Secondary Skill.” You get another specialty for the fourth and fifth dot, which means you can have up to 3 specialties in skill. A Secondary Skill is a specialization within that skill that you are particularly good at. This isn’t just flavor, it actually allows you to get one automatic success any time you use that skill and the specialty is applicable.
Number of Specialties Per Dot
1 dot - 0
2 dots - 0
3 dots - +1
4 dots - +1 (so now you would have 2)
5 dots - +1 (so now you would have 3)
When adding a skill to your character sheet, do so like this:
Skill: #ofdots (Specialty, Specialty)
Example: Melee: 4 (knives, tridents)
A silly example:
Emerys has the Drive Skill at 3. So he can take a specialty. He takes Parallel Parking. On his sheet it looks like this:
Drive: 3 (Parallel Parking)
Now, he is in a scenario where he is trying to get to an estate sale put on by Dolly Parton. There is only one parking spot though, and it’s a particularly narrow one! The Storyteller says the difficulty is 8. He also says that 1 success is needed to get into the spot, but at least 2 successes are needed to get in the spot without a ding.
Now Emerys has Dexterity 5 and Drive 3, so normally he would roll ( Dexterity + Drive) (5+3) so 8D10. (8 ten sided dice). He would have to roll 7 or higher on at least two dice. BUT, because he has the specialty “Parallel Parking” he has an automatic success, because he’s just that good at it. So he is guaranteed to at least get into the spot, and now, he only has to roll 7 or higher on one die or more (not counting botches, but that’s another topic entirely.) to not damage his vehicle.
Notes:
Skills can be raised or gained through RP, so if you’re RPing learning with someone, be sure to save the transcripts!
You can only raise a skill to 5.
